Begin design decisions and purchases starting from the ground and work up. The most critical choice that ultimately determines other room elements is your flooring and rug choices. 

Flooring and rugs set the tone of your entire home. The higher the finish, the more formal the appearance. Wood or stone floor may be preferable if you have pets. Wall to wall carpeting is softer on children.

Define and enhance living areas with area rugs. They break up large spaces, are easy to move around, and can be inexpensive to replace when you want to update, or completely  redecorate a room.

Add a small rug on top of a larger one to break up wall to wall carpeting. However, area rugs should cover the floor area under a seating arrangement. There should be no more than a 12 inch margin of floor showing around a full room area rug.
